Hydrogen Sulfide: Awareness & Safety Tips

hydrogen sulfide awareness

Introduction

Working at an oilfield could potentially expose you to hydrogen sulfide (H2S). It has a faint smell of rotten eggs (you may not always be able to smell it) and the situation can turn deadly very fast.

Even if you do not work at an oilfield or any gas field you can be exposed to hydrogen sulfide as it is one of the most common toxic gases.

Where is Hydrogen Sulfide?

Hydrogen sulfide is a toxic and deadly gas, it is a byproduct of industrial and chemical processes and can also be formed when organic materials decay.

It is commonly found in oilfields, sewers, and mines. It can also be found in paper mills, breweries, and manure processing plants.

Characteristics of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S)

  • It is denser/heavier than air
  • found in low areas, such as sewers, pits, and cellars
  • It is a flammable gas and upon ignition, it will travel back to the source of the gas
  • In its pure state, hydrogen sulfide is colorless.

Health Effects

Hydrogen sulfide poses several threats.

  • It is a chemical asphyxiant and highly toxic.
  • It can impair your sense of smell.
  • You may notice a headache or labored breathing.
  • It can cause a metallic taste and can poison you.
  • High concentrations of hydrogen sulfide can cause brain damage, cardiac arrest, or even death.
  • It can cause unconsciousness, you may need immediate medical attention.

Detection

In an area where hydrogen sulfide is present, the employer is requested to perform certain tests to detect hydrogen sulfide in the atmosphere.

  • Lead acetate strips (change color)
  • Electronic monitors and sound alarms.
  • Grab samples ( may take some time since they have to be sent to a lab)
  • Colorimetric tubes (silica gel).

Respirators

You may need training before entering or using any respiratory equipment. A fit test or medical examination may also be required. Escape-only air packs should be made available for workers exiting a toxic atmosphere, do not use them to enter or perform rescue missions.

Emergency Response Plans

You should receive training regarding the emergency response plan for your work site. The plan may include the following.

  • Shutting down systems.
  • Evacuating the area.
  • Notifying emergency responders.
  • Going to a safe evacuation area.
  • Completing routine training and drills.

  • Ensure your own safety.
  • Call emergency responders for help.
  • Wear an atmosphere-supplying respirator (do not use escape-only air packs).
  • Move the victim away from danger to a safe area with fresh air.
  • Begin CPR.
  • Get professional help for the victim as soon as possible.

Conclusion

Hydrogen sulfide is a common toxic gas but you can work in its presence, you must know how to recognize the signs and symptoms. The use of protective equipment is essential for safe work practices and proper training on how to respond to an emergency could be the difference between an emergency and a disaster.
