What Is NYC 40 Hour Site Safety Training (SST) for Workers?

The NYC 40 Hour Site Safety Training (SST) is part of the local regulations set by the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB). According to Local Law 196 of 2017, all construction/demolition workers at job sites in New York City must complete this 40 hour training. The course is designed to educate workers about job site hazards and necessary safety protocols to minimize risks and improve job site safety.

What is included in the NYC 40 Hour SST Package?

The NYC SST 40 Hour training consists of two sections:

  • OSHA 30 Hour Construction Industry Outreach Training: Covers important safety topics for the construction industry. It provides workers with detailed knowledge of safety standards, practices, and regulations, helping them effectively manage and mitigate hazards on site.
  • NYC SST 10 Hour Training:
This part focusses on specific NYC safety requirements and includes:
  • Fall Prevention (8-Hour): Covers fall hazards and the necessary steps to prevent falls, including the correct use of fall protection equipment. For example, if you're working at a height of six feet or more, you'll learn how to properly wear a safety harness, set up guardrails, or secure open edges to prevent falls.
  • Drug and Alcohol Awareness (2-Hour): Focuses on the effects of substance abuse on job performance and safety.

What Will Students Receive After Completion?

Upon successful completion of the NYC 40 Hour Site Safety Training, students will receive two credentials:

  • OSHA 30 Hour Card: Issued by the Department of Labor (DOL), this card confirms that the individual has successfully completed the OSHA 30 Hour Construction Industry Outreach training.
  • NYC Site Safety Card: Issued by the Department of Buildings (DOB), this card verifies compliance with NYC safety regulations and confirms that the individual has completed the NYC SST 40 Hour training.
