Know about does osha 10 and 30 hour card expire

Introduction

OSHA 10 and 30 Hour trainings teach workers and supervisors about workplace hazards, worker rights, and employer responsibilities. A common question is whether these certifications or cards expire. The answer depends on specific circumstances, industry practices, and local requirements.

What Are OSHA 10 and 30 Hour Certifications?

  • OSHA 10 Hour: A program designed for entry-level workers, focusing on common hazards, workplace rights, and basic safety measures.
  • OSHA 30 Hour: A more detailed course for supervisors and managers, covering a wider range of workplace safety topics and responsibilities.

Upon successful completion, individuals receive official Department of Labor (DOL) OSHA cards as proof of their training.

Do OSHA 10 and 30 Hour Certifications/Cards Expire?

At the federal level, OSHA 10 and 30 Hour certifications or cards do not expire. Once issued, they remain valid for a lifetime. However, certain situations may require workers to renew their training.

When Renewal May Be Necessary

OSHA 10 Construction Training is perfect for plumbers entering the industry or working on small to medium-sized projects. It provides basic safety knowledge to confidently manage jobsite risks.

  • Industry-Specific Requirement: High-risk industries, like construction, may require workers to renew training every five years to stay updated on safety standards.
  • Employer Policies: Many employers require or recommend refresher training as part of their safety programs to reduce risks
  • Local Regulations: Some jurisdictions have specific requirements for OSHA training validity, such as New York City’s Site Safety Training (SST) rules, which require OSHA 30-Hour training to be completed within the last five years.

OSHA Certification Policies in NYC

Under NYC Local Law 196 of 2017, OSHA certifications play an important role in obtaining Site Safety Training (SST) cards for workers and supervisors on major construction sites.

OSHA 30 Hour Card Validity:

To apply for an SST card, the OSHA 30 Hour card must not be older than five years. If it is, the individual must retake the OSHA 30-Hour training.

Renewing SST Cards:

Individuals whose SST cards are about to expire can take refresher training to renew their validity for another five years. However, if the SST card expires, the individual must retake the full training, including the OSHA 30 Hour Construction Training.

What If the Card Is Lost?

If your card is lost, you can request a replacement card from the training provider where you completed the training. However, replacement cards can only be issued to individuals who completed their training within the last five years.

If it has been more than five years since your training, a replacement card cannot be issued. In this case, you will need to retake the training to receive a new card.
