Learn about EPA DOT Safety online training

Introduction

Handling and transporting hazardous materials requires following federal safety regulations. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) oversees the safe movement of hazardous materials, while the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates the proper management of hazardous waste. Workers involved in shipping, receiving, storing, or disposing of hazardous substances need the right knowledge to manage risks, meet regulatory standards, and protect both people and the environment.

EPA’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) manages the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), which provides a framework for handling hazardous waste from generation to final disposal. Known as the "cradle-to-grave" system, RCRA requires facilities to track hazardous waste at every stage through proper identification, safe storage, clear labeling, and accurate recordkeeping.

It also sets standards for treatment, recycling, and disposal to limit environmental impact. Noncompliance can lead to legal penalties and risks to public health. Employees who handle hazardous waste must be trained to recognize regulated materials, apply safe handling practices, and maintain proper documentation.

DOT Hazardous Materials Transportation Regulations

The Department of Transportation (DOT) oversees the movement of hazardous materials by road, air, rail, and water. Its Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) detail the requirements for classification, packaging, marking, labeling, placarding, and preparing shipping papers.

Each mode of transport has specific rules. For example, air shipments require packaging that can withstand pressure changes, while water shipments follow the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code. Carriers must also meet security awareness standards and hold proper certifications before transporting hazardous materials.

Failure to meet DOT regulations can result in accidents, environmental harm, and heavy fines. Workers involved in preparing, loading, or transporting hazardous materials must receive training to carry out these responsibilities safely.

The Importance of Training

RCRA and DOT hazardous materials rules are complex and involve detailed regulations. Proper training helps workers:

Training also helps organizations meet federal requirements, improve workplace safety, and protect the environment from potential harm.

DOT/EPA Hazardous Materials Training at OSHA Training School

OSHA Training School offers a fully online DOT/EPA Hazardous Materials Training program for individuals who handle hazardous waste or ship hazardous materials.
