Injury Rate and Fatalities

The injury rate among the labor force in the United States varies across different industries and demographics. The injury rate for Hispanic and Latino workers in the U.S. has been a concern, as these workers often face higher risks in certain industries. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) regularly collect and report data on workplace injuries and illnesses, including information specific to Hispanic and Latino workers.

Key Statistics and Findings

1. Overall Trends

Hispanic and Latino workers often experience higher rates of workplace injuries and fatalities compared to the overall workforce.

The construction, agriculture, and manufacturing industries tend to have higher injury rates for Hispanic and Latino workers.

2. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Data

According to BLS data, the rate of nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses for Hispanic or Latino workers has been higher than the national average.

In 2020, the BLS reported that Hispanic or Latino workers accounted for 22% of all workplace fatalities, while they represented 18% of the workforce.

3. Fatality Rates

The fatal injury rate for Hispanic or Latino workers is often higher than that for non-Hispanic workers. For example, in 2019, the fatal injury rate for Hispanic or Latino workers was 4.2 per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers, compared to 3.5 for all workers.

Conclusion

Ensuring your workforce completes the OSHA 10 and 30-hour training is absolutely vital for maintaining a safe and compliant work environment. This training provides complete safety and health education, helping workers recognize and mitigate hazards on the job. Including your Hispanic workers in this training is particularly important, as they often face higher risks in the workplace. Providing OSHA training in both English and Spanish can overcome language barriers, empowering all employees with the knowledge and skills to work safely. By prioritizing OSHA training, you demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of your entire workforce, fostering a culture of safety and inclusivity.
