Renewing Expired SST Cards for Construction Sites in NYC

Renew Your SSt card for Construction

What Happens If Your Site Safety Training Card Expires?

Site Safety Training (SST) is mandatory for workers and supervisors on NYC construction sites. With NYC Local Law 196 of 2017 in place, workers and supervisors must complete specific training to receive their SST cards, which allow them to work legally on construction sites in New York City. But what happens if a SST card expires?

If a SST card expires, certain steps are required to renew either the 40 Hour SST Worker Card or the 62 Hour SST Supervisor Card.

Understanding SST Card Requirements

The Site Safety Training program is designed to maintain safety and compliance in high-risk construction environments. The two main SST cards are:

  • 40-Hour SST Worker Card: Required for construction and demolition workers.
  • 62-Hour SST Supervisor Card: Required for supervisors, including Site Safety Managers, Site Safety Coordinators, Construction Superintendents, Concrete Safety Managers, and Competent Persons appointed by Construction Superintendents.

Each card has its own training requirements, and the renewal process is different for each one. It's important to complete the required courses to renew an expired card and stay eligible to work on NYC construction sites.

What to Do If Your 40 Hour SST Worker Card Expires

If a 40 Hour SST Worker Card expires, the individual needs to complete the entire 40 hours of Site Safety Training again to renew their card. This includes:

  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Course: This course covers important safety topics such as fall protection, hazard identification, and personal protective equipment. It is important for compliance and introduces key safety practices for construction workers.
  • NYC SST 10 Hour Program: In addition to the OSHA 30 Hour, an additional 10 hours of Site Safety Training specific to New York City’s regulations and construction standards is required. This training focuses on the specific safety needs of NYC construction sites.

By completing both the OSHA 30 Hour Construction Training and the 10 hours of Site Safety Training, a trainee can obtain a new 40-Hour SST Worker Card, allowing them to work on NYC construction sites again.

What to Do If Your 62-Hour SST Supervisor Card Expires

If a 62-Hour SST Supervisor Card expires, the supervisor must complete the full training required for a new card. This process includes:

  • OSHA 30 Hour Construction: Supervisors need to complete the OSHA 30-hour course, which is also a requirement for the worker card. This emphasizes the importance of key safety practices, hazard identification, and risk management for all construction personnel.
  • NYC SST 32 Hour Supervisor Program: Along with the OSHA 30 Hour course, supervisors complete 32 hours of Site Safety Training. This advanced training prepares supervisors for safety leadership and covers important topics such as Supported Scaffold User, Fall Prevention, and Site Safety Plan (SSP).

Once the OSHA 30 Hour Construction course and the NYC SST 32-Hour program are completed, the supervisor will receive a new 62 Hour SST Supervisor Card. This card allows them to return to their supervisory role on NYC construction sites and stay compliant with Local Law 196.

Renew Your SST Card Before It Expires

For individuals with SST cards close to expiration, the refresher training option allows them to keep their cards current without retaking the full training program. The NYC SST 40 Hour Worker Card requires the 8 Hour Worker Refresher, while the SST 62 Hour Supervisor Card requires the 16 Hour Supervisor Refresher. This refresher training provides an easy way to stay up to date, avoiding the need to complete the full training program again.

In New York City, keeping SST cards up to date is both a legal requirement and a personal responsibility for construction workers and supervisors. Expired cards require individuals to undergo full training again. By staying proactive with renewals, construction sites can remain safe and compliant for everyone involved.
