Mining is one of the most hazardous industries in the U.S. A report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that mining-related fatalities increased by 21.8% between 2020 and 2021, rising from 78 to 95 deaths in that period. These numbers highlight the importance of proper safety training in protecting workers and reducing risks.
The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires specific training programs under 30 CFR Part 46 and Part 48. These programs are designed to help miners, contractors, and supervisors recognize hazards and respond effectively in high-risk environments.
Mining environments present serious risks such as:
Part 46 applies to surface non-metal and non-coal mines, including sand, gravel, stone, cement, and shell dredging operations. It includes:
a) New Miner Training (24 Hours):OSHA Training School provides the 8-hour online portion of Part 46 New Miner Training, while the remaining 16 hours are completed on-site with a designated trainer.
b) Annual Refresher Training (8 Hours):Part 46 Annual Refresher Training is offered online through OSHA Training School, helping individuals stay compliant without disrupting their schedules.
c) Task Training:Part 48 applied to underground mines and surface areas of underground mines for coal and metal/non-metal mining:
MSHA training plays an important role in protecting miners’ safety. Whether starting as a new miner or continuing as an experienced worker, completing Part 46 or Part 48 training helps control risks and maintain compliance. OSHA Training School offers online Part 46 New Miner and Annual Refresher courses designed for today’s surface mining workforce. Part 48 training, however, is not available online and must be taken in person.
