NYC DOB Now Gives Workers One Year After SST Card Expiration to Renew

NYC sst card expired one year renewal dob rules

If your New York City Site Safety Training (SST) card has expired or is about to expire, there is important news from the Department of Buildings. Effective May 3, 2026, Local Law 10 (LL10) of 2026 introduced a one-year grace period for SST card renewals. Under this update, workers can now renew their SST card after it expires, as long as the renewal is completed within one year of the expiration date.

Important: This new rule only applies to SST cards that expire on or after May 3, 2026. If your SST card expired before May 3, 2026, you cannot renew it by only taking the 8-Hour SST Worker Refresher or the 16-hour SST Supervisor Refresher. Additional training is required to obtain a new SST card.

We offer bundle packages for workers whose SST cards expired before May 3, 2026. Start a chat with us, and we will help you determine which training you need.

This is a meaningful change for construction workers across New York City. Instead of losing your SST card status immediately after expiration, workers now have one full year to complete their refresher course and renew their SST card. For workers whose SST card has expired, this grace period provides a way to renew without starting over from scratch.

Understanding how this grace period works, and what happens if you miss it, is important for every NYC construction worker.

How the One-Year Grace Period Works

Any SST card that expires on or after May 3, 2026, is covered under the new grace period rule. Once your card expires, you have one full year from the expiration date to complete the DOB-approved SST refresher course and renew your card.

This means if your SST card expired in June 2026, you have until June 2027 to complete your renewal. If it expired in October 2026, you have until October 2027. The one-year period starts from your card’s expiration date, not from May 3, 2026.

There is one important condition every worker needs to understand clearly. During the grace period, an expired SST card cannot be used on a job site. You cannot present an expired card to a general contractor or DOB inspector and expect to be allowed on-site. The grace period gives you time to renew, not permission to continue working with an expired card.

This is why completing your SST refresher course as soon as possible after your card expires, or even before it expires, is always the best option.

What Happens If You Miss the One-Year Grace Period

If your SST card expires and you do not complete your renewal within the one-year grace period, you lose the option to renew entirely. At that point, you would be required to apply for a new SST card and complete all required training hours from the beginning, the same process that a first-time applicant goes through.

Important

If you have a valid OSHA 30-hour card issued within the past five years, you are eligible to complete only the 10-Hour SST training or the 32-Hour SST course. If not, you will need to complete either the full 40-hour SST course or the 62-hour SST course, depending on your requirement.

We also offer bundle packages for expired SST cards, including 18-hour worker package and a 40-hour supervisor package.

Do not let the one-year window slip by. Once it closes, there is no extension.

How to Renew Your SST Card

Renewing your SST card within the grace period requires completing an approved SST refresher course through a registered NYC DOB course provider. Once you complete the course, you will receive your renewed SST card by mail.

OSHA Training School offers SST refresher courses that are fully online and self-paced. You can take the training from your phone or laptop at any time of the day, start and stop without losing your progress, and complete it during evenings or weekends without missing time on the job. There is no classroom, no fixed schedule, and no waiting for the next available session.

Both the 8-hour SST Worker Refresher for construction workers and the 16-hour SST Supervisor Refresher for site safety supervisors are NYC DOB-approved and meet all requirements for SST card renewal.

Do Not Wait Until the Last Minute

The one-year grace period is there to help workers who have let their SST card expire, but it should not be used as a reason to delay. Once your SST card expires, you cannot work on covered New York City construction sites until it is renewed. The sooner you complete your SST refresher course, the sooner your SST card returns to good standing and you can get back to work.

Check your SST card expiration date today. If it has already expired or is expiring soon, complete your refresher course now and protect your ability to work.
